Canonical is pleased to announce that Ubuntu and Ubuntu Pro support the newly-launched Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 VMs. Over 95% of packages in the Ubuntu archive also work on Arm, making it the perfect choice to leverage these powerful and high-performance cloud environments for a wide array of applications. Ubuntu Pro extends Ubuntu with additional security coverage, letting you use that expanded range of packages while still meeting your security and compliance requirements.

Designed for diverse workloads

The Azure Cobalt 100 VMs are ideal for a variety of demanding workloads such as application servers, machine learning platforms, open-source databases, in-memory caches, and cloud-native applications on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). Additionally, these VMs are well-suited for Anbox Cloud, which facilitates running Arm based Android at scale in cloud environments, enhancing performance and density for a wide range of use cases, such as cloud gaming, automation or testing of applications.

Preview availability

Microsoft is currently offering a preview of the Azure Cobalt 100 VMs. For detailed information about the preview and the capabilities of the Azure Cobalt 100 VMs, please refer to the official Microsoft announcement.

Canonical is committed to ensuring that Ubuntu remains the operating system of choice for cloud developers and enterprises seeking to harness the latest advancements in cloud technology. By supporting Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 VMs, we enhance performance and operational efficiency, especially by leveraging the cost and energy benefits of Arm-based architectures for complex workloads. Our ongoing support and compatibility with cutting-edge cloud features underscore Ubuntu’s position as the leading choice for modern cloud computing environments, ready to deploy the newest cloud capabilities as soon as they are released.
